B1 Business Travel Visa / B2 Tourist Visa

The B1 or B2 visitor visa is a nonimmigrant visa for foreign citizens wishing to enter the United States temporarily for business (B1, Business Travel Visa) or for pleasure or medical treatment (B2, Tourist Visa). They are good for short-term visits of up to one year and are often issued together as a B1/B2 Visa.

The B1 visa is designed for travelers attending business or professional conferences or conventions, consulting with business associates, negotiating contracts, purchasing goods or materials, appearing as a witness in court trials, or undertaking independent research.

The B-2 visa is for travel that is recreational in nature, including tourism, visits with friends or relatives, medical treatment, and activities of a fraternal, social or service nature.

B1 Business Visa / B2 Tourist Visa Process

Applicants for a B1 business or B2 tourist visa must show that they qualify for such a visa. The presumption is that every visitor visa applicant is intending to stay in the U.S. Therefore, applicants for B1 or B2 visas must convince the consular officer the temporary nature of their trip by demonstrating that:

  • The purpose of your trip is to enter the U.S. for business, pleasure, or medical treatment.
  • That you plan to remain for a specific, temporary period of time.
  • That you have a residence outside the U.S. as well as other strong economic, financial, and family ties to your home country, which will ensure your return home at the end of the visit.
  • Evidence of funds to cover your expenses while in the United States.
